Yet the song isn't good evening and welcome to the annual meeting of the Council, the Leader of the Council Councillor Hall, will you now say a few ways followed by the leader of the opposition, Councillor Councillor, Sweden?
Councillor Hogg,
Thank you, Madam Mayor, welcome everyone. I'm really pleased to be able to say a few words about the outgoing Mayor and about the role of Mayor in our civic life. Firstly, a huge thank you to you. You know you make Wandsworth what it is a fantastic place to live with strong, diverse communities. This council has a mission to keep one's worth special and make it a more compassionate and a fairer and a more sustainable place to live. And I'm very proud to say when London's borough of culture next year and hopefully next month will be accredited as a borough of sanctuary for refugees as well. It's lovely to be speaking about my friend Juliana, you know people know her and they trust her because they know she's been through life's challenges alongside them and she treats everyone with respect
I Hussain to Sonia and Juliana Ali, like this is Ubig Nye, you know, nothing is gonna eclipse this for you, this is gonna be the biggest story in politics this week.
This is an.
So thanks Rishi, and so if everyone down the front is checking their phones, the whole time is what I'm standing in Yorkshire, this is this is him, but we will try and focus tonight we we will be pressing.
and and that's one of the words that comes up with Juliana as mayor, she is always present when she goes to an event she stays there, in often for many hours she doesn't just brush through things she's very visible in the community and and very well known and loved in her community and she's done a great job from receptions here for.
one's worth pride for the high commissioner of granita to meeting Frank Bruno at his old school Swaffield School and hosting members of the royal family, she is a pro
I was impressed to hear that Juliana turned on 20 sets of Christmas lights last December and that's all the more impressive because she had to untangle them first before she turned the month, so it's an impressive achievement and you know say she's lifted she has lifted, we were in this room actually last week for our jobs, for more than a thousand jobseekers came here next door, I the talk to employers, some got job offers on the spot and Juliana was here and she was able to save people. I was at this job for a few years ago and I got a job in Tesco out of it. So when people see Juliana they know she is a mirror of the people.
She raised 35,000 pounds throughout this year for her three chosen charities, I'm sure she'll say more about k less about black minds matter and keeping families together, and do please consider giving to those marrow charities, whether today or in the months to come, because the Council will match your donation up to an annual limit for us of 50,000 pounds so you'll be doing twice as much good if you can support Councillor Jeffreys marrow charities.
Because we have an incredibly incredible voluntary sector here in Wandsworth and we want to deepen our partnership with it.
I'll just focus on one event, which was a dinner and dance in October this year has chortling, described as legendary Ray raised 12,000 pounds as is traditional Councillor Belsen and his partner Penny were first onto the dance floor, Councillor Garcès said it was the most fun I've had in the town home because she's not on Finance Committee so that's your opinion, but is it might not be true and the evening concluded with a dance of here featuring various mayors from across London, but I think it's fair to say that one's worth remains number 1,
Juliana believes in young people it's been lovely, throughout the year she's brought entire classes of young people into the town hall and giving them tools, as she was really keen on this, having a Youth Mayor.
and I think it's crucial we listened to the new generation, we're delighted to welcome Millie and favour tonight.
Obviously I feel very close to them, I think it's really important we have people our age in positions of responsibility.
We're going to hang out later yeah I mean I'm I'm just playing 49 fighting listening to Olivia, Rodrigo will yeah, whatever whatever, and I mean those close to Juliana, we'll also know that all of this all of this has been achieved and with great good humour egg against a background of some personal and some health challenges which I think make it all the more impressive and all the more appreciated, so thank you very much too.
because a good mare is interested in people and he's kind and as we know we we try and be kind to people, because everyone is fighting those struggles that we just don't know about and people are unique and strange people are weird they are, they are much more weight than you could imagine and all right I'll tell you something if you just give me two more minutes and do one thing for me, I'll tell you something I haven't told anyone else the late Labour Councillors don't know this.
OK I'll start, so imagine you are the Mayor, imagine yourself, as may I just close your eyes and imagine that you're the Mayor, so you are there in your red clothes y ropes, you go the gold chains on you, look fantastic, it could be, you OK now open your eyes, so how did it go for you? So for some people will have been a beautiful 3D mayor that you can turn around
For some of you may be appeared in black and white, but for me it's nothing as it turns out, I I just don't have a mind's eye when I close my eyes, it's just blank.
It's just darkness and this is called a fantasia. I find I find that it didn't find out about it until quite recently, because I thought you lot were just being metaphorical when you said picture this imagine this thing is going to happen. So here I am a politician with no vision, so I am sharing this with you. I'm sharing this with you to make the point that we are all unique and we are all strange, and when you look at someone you can't just assume that they're the same issue, although they fit into a simple bucket or they meet some idea of what's normal because some people don't have a voice in their head. Some of you have three separate voices in your heads and as some of us, of course, it's in French or it's in Urdu, and we had the pleasure last week of welcoming some ESOL students from Katherine Lowe, settlement Juliana brought them into the Town Hall and the English students, English as a second language, students and as part of the discussion, it became clear that Juliana was actually expressing herself in her fourth language, and just imagine that all of your ideas, all of your concepts, keeping up with full Council, she's doing that in her fourth language which again is a hugely impressive achievement.
So you know some of us can dance, some of us have childhood memories, some people like being alone, it takes all sorts. My point is, we must try and imagine what it's like to be other people and we empathise as far as we can, but because it's impossible to issue what it's like for other people. We just have to tolerate the fact that we're all weird in different ways and we all get to carry each other, and that's why it's so silly to say that everyone in one group is the same hearing ones with we don't judge on the surface, we look at the whole person and this thing doesn't affect me too much, it's it's like nothing that I avenue that I was lacking, but I know when things get taken away from people, the loss is much worse and I know we all know people who are losing their sigh, they're losing their mobility, they're losing their memory and again, thank you to everyone here. Who is a carer who is involved in an organisation who's supporting people who are going through those journeys.
so, like Juliana, we live in the moment, we do our best and we treat everyone with the same respect.
And I'd just like to finish with a few words about sauna.
He's fantastic, and I know Councillor White will say far more about this, but a hard-working lawyer, brilliant activists seemed to be armour, she's gonna be amazing, but I just I think we have to admit that sauna is part of a secretive group that controls Wandsworth council De La I'm not talking about the freemasons, it's it's not people from the West Midlands, it's is much closer to home than that it's and the public has a right to know this Wandsworth council is secretly controlled by a very small group which is students from Bow with school.
It is not just our new Mayor, not just our deputy leader, not just our refugees champion a chair of a would, I mean all sorts of people in fact put your hands up if, if you went to bed with school anything you see that everywhere our community is controlled it would grind to a halt without the great graduates but with schools. So finally I just like to say thank you to all of the teachers in the borough the incredible job that you are doing bringing through the next generation one of the great things Juliana did was hold a reception for all the head teachers in our marble halls, so we could try to thank them.
So thank you Julianna, for your service, good luck, sonar, I know you do you old school proud, and now you do are so proud and I wish you all the luck in the world, thank you very much.
Councillor Smith,
Madam Mayor, on behalf of the Conservative Group for Wandsworth Council, I'd like to thank you for your service to the residents of Wandsworth this past year, a colleague of mine has noted to me that one hallmark of your time as mayor and a very refreshing one for a politician is that you don't relish giving long and tedious speeches and I intend to follow your example tonight and keep my remarks very short.
you became mayor last May after only a year on the Council, and because of that you've brought a freshness to the role that councillors on both sides of the Council have respected and welcomed, and I think this will actually have a lasting impact on the way future mayors approach their time as mayor you've brought your personality experiences and I think your modesty as well to bear on the way you do business in Wandsworth and it's safe to say that we have absolutely loved getting to know you.
I asked my colleagues for their reflections on your term. One of them described you to me as super friendly, which I think wonderfully captures the approach you've taken the town hall this year has echoed with your laughter and it's been a great thing to hear your friendliness has brought meetings and events to life and your patients, even when you've had your own challenges, has been remarkable and inspiring that friendly and personal way of doing business means. Many of us have the Mayor's number on speed dial on our phones for the first time that I can remember
You've made personal calls to councils councillors to drum up support for things that matter to you and to the residents of Wandsworth, I remember receiving a phone call from you, Madam Mayor, to ask me to help you with an event, and another councillor told me that you had specifically rung to thank them for attending an event that was important to you too.
Another councillor still told me that you clanked, thank them for attending your wonderful civic service as well, and I think that personal touch has been a big feature of your time as mayor is infectious, and it has really set the time for this year in Wandsworth.
You've been a mayor that has commanded respect from both political parties, and you've tried to remind us at all times that we're here together to serve the people of Wandsworth, whatever our political differences may be. One councillor said to me that you genuinely had time for councillors of all parties, and I know from personal experience that you gladly joined councillors across the borough as we've had already turning on Christmas tree lights alongside Conservative and Labour councillors alike. I gather you told of one councillor who said that they shouldn't be speaking to Conservatives, so thank you very much for that.
this has been reflected in the great fairness with which you've chaired our council meetings, you've dealt firmly but fairly with colleagues from both parties during Council debates, and I've noticed this year that councillors have really listened to you and paid attention to your instructions, and this isn't an easy feat as those of us that have been councillors for a little while will know.
and it shows the respect that I think you've you've commanded through your authority and and your charisma, you care deeply for young people, as we heard from Councillor Hulk, not only inviting schoolchildren into the Town Hall, but I understand you run a homework club as well and you've set up debates to allow people to practise their debating skills.
Your other passion has been for people whose second language is English, but beyond this, your support for women in business and for empowering women is an inspiration to so many people in this town who and across the borough, the three charities that you've supported, reflect causes that it is your heart's like Kayal s black minds matter and keeping families together and I know that they will have appreciated your support and the profile that you've given them this year.
I said earlier that I thought that the fresh approach that you've taken to this role would have a lasting impact on future mayors, but there is one aspect that I think very unlikely to carry on, and that is singing because a wonderful highlights, if your Christmas event was when you and your poster sang and you followed this up at the Civic Service with a duet with your daughter,
I hope that we may, one day here, are all of you singing again to one's recommend and your successor, I say better, get the lessons in now the fix.
Madam Mayor, you have achieved so much more this year than I've had time to say, but I promise to keep the speech shorts, so let me conclude by saying a huge thank you once again for your leadership of the Borough this year, thank you.
Deputy Lieutenant Colin, Harris.
Councillors' offices, ladies and gentlemen, good even once again, thank you to Councillor Hulk and Councillor Sweet for your kind, generous words before I continue with my speech I like to call my pastor Mustafa as of way due to break I started my year with prayer and I want to end it with prayer.
With

Where people come to leave play enjoy.
Our space and what to create value and meaningful outcome, all these I have seen over the past year a year ago, when I had the pleasure to be at the start of this journey, a shed that I came into politics, to be an advocate for the voiceless that everyday people like me who are disadvantaged who are not able to speak for themselves because their voice cannot go far and also supports for young people in our in our borough leading me to becoming a Councillor.
Becoming male was a big opportunity for me to inspire our young generation and people from the Black Asian minority.
Community as I stand here in my last role as a male, I cannot share that during my year when, regardless of my health issues of length about the love and one of our arrested things I have seen, while enjoying at its very best, are spoken with schoolchildren who are bright with ideas for the future.
I have spent time with the older members of our community and share in their memories of what continue to make our borough a wonderful place to be have engaged with faith leaders from many different backgrounds and groups, and seen the role of faith in building bridges in supporting community are seen the Council making a meaningful difference in the life of others.

I have put a particular focus on involving primary schoolchildren
4 at all in one small town and involving them in educational programme to learn about the council which has played a big part the Council becoming more outward facing I'm delighted to learn that the council will continue to build on engagement with young people in the borough and hope that in future in future years we can continue to celebrate and spun on this commitments

I hand over the baton to you and know that you will continue to make a difference, thank you of allowing me this extended time to speak Keble.
Thank you the first business.
The first business on the agenda is the election of Mayor, may I have a nomination for the office of Mayor while ensuring here.
I would like to nominate a Councillor, Sir, Geoffrey.
although the second nomination thank desk.
Councillor White, please can you speak, thank you, as someone who is a neighbour to Bob would go, and my son actually spent two years of, was going back to re-emphasise this mafia like.
If community within the Labour Group.
So I'm really really pleased to be standing and nominating Sano the first met Sana for a mutual trusted friend when I was looking for people to increase the quota of divers or difficult to get to communities to become Councillor, my friend's endorsement was ringing hard working lots of community activity supporting charities like little village.
and being a good all round person,
When I met her, I found this to be true.
But then I had to add a very clever, cheerful, funny, resilient and loyal person, and it was, and she is well liked within our group, health hints on nomination for once, with Mayo, being an immigration lawyer, she was very busy with a young family of two lovely children and two wonderful parents and her mum is where I hear the politics come from.
She entered our selection process with no fears getting selected in a ward against very Ágúst opponents and then winning in once with Town which, along with her ward colleague Sarah, she has been a great success.
Balancing her professional and family life with counselling has not been easy and Sonia has found out how difficult it has been to raise a young family in Wandsworth, with high rents and through her work, and through her casework, she has also faced Islamophobia and gender stereotyping, which completely ignores her independence her inner strength and drive to achieve in her chosen careers.
She has also been very brave in facing down attacks she has received for believing she should continue to support her community, providing inspiration for others to follow in her footsteps, bringing more diversity to this Council and use her platform to highlight the great injustices, including has a civilian cow religious facing untrammelled assault internationally she has chosen two charities that reflect her concern for those who are struggling in the current economic climate, both of which is visited and civilian action.
Sonar has a very sunny disposition and when I meet us she always has a bright smile and eager to see the funniest side of life, and no doubt we will see this and lots of her impressive range of Curtis to match her chains of office as the first Muslim never mind. Hijabi, wearing Shia Muslim, to be once with Mayor is a proud moment for her, her family and community, but equally it was a great moment for Wandsworth, well known for our welcome for so many communities that live side by side in harmony. So it's my great great pleasure to nominate my good friend and fellow Connacht councillor Sana Jaffray to be the next mayor of Wandsworth.
What

In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful 0 God bless Mohammed and the family of Mohamed, thank you very much, I'm very honored for you to invite me here to say a few words and I'm just be talking about the connectivity of London as a city I came to London in 1990 from Sussex and all of my education was at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London I obtained my doctorate in 2006.
As well as Irish and Scots ancestry, I also have Safidy and Ashkenazi ancestors.
that came here in the 19th century narrowly, escaping the death camps a few decades later, and some of them still live in the East End.
I came to Islam in 1999.
Through a friend of mine in Larratt Grove, who was Morrocan?
The great thing about London is its capacity to accommodate different nations and cultures.
We are truly spoilt with the sheer range of cuisines here.
And Londoners are smart and managed to get on with each other even through difficult circumstances, it is a dynamic and creative city and a place where you can learn so much.
We know that poverty is rising, that there are housing problems.
And young people have great economic challenges ahead, the keirin says that God created us as a single pair and made us intonations and tribes so that we may come to know one another.
Through communication we can all get to know each other better and work to solve the issues of inequality and poverty in this city I have no doubt that Mayor Sana Joffrey will be working hard to develop a better world for young and old in Wandsworth, bringing everyone together as one.
I am working for a common cause, which is to improve things such as street safety, housing conditions.
And community bonds,
Thank you very much again and I look forward to.
Seeing the next year and everything that you'll be doing, thank you.
I thank you, I thank you for your kind words.
I'm going to move on to Item agenda number 2, so is the appointment of a Deputy Mayor.
I have appointed Councillor Fine, is to be Deputy Mayor of the Borough, and Connor McDarby will be the deputy mayor's consort, I look forward to serving ones with alongside you.
so, moving on to Item agenda number 3, the minutes of the meeting held on 6 March 2024 have been circulated, is it agreed that I sign them as a correct record?
Thank you item number for them, so before I commence with the evening.
Before I commence with the evening, may I humbly request that we observe a minute's silence for all those who are suffering going through hardship in Wandsworth and beyond, who are facing poverty, oppression or violence, our thoughts go out to you.
Let us start humming in silence.
Thank you.
Apologies for absence have been received from Councillors, Colclough Cook Cooper, French Paul Satis and Ratha, Roger.
Are there any further apologies for absence?
Both have been noted, thank you.
I regret to inform members that former Councillor Neville Daniels passed away recently, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and more formal tributes will be paid at the July meeting of the Council, so I am Summer Jaffrey, born in St George's hospital.
And a lifelong resident of Wandsworth, educated at bandwidth school, whose motto was the best education today for the women of tomorrow.
And this has been my guiding principle.
So after completing my degree and master's, I began my journey and I became an immigration lawyer and an advocate, and then in May 2022 I became a Councillor in Wandsworth town.
Last year I had the privilege of serving as Deputy Mayor under the brilliant Mayor, Juliana unknown, thank you, Councillor, for your partnership.
And I'm not too sure I'll be able to sing as great as you ever
Or dance or be as charismatic as you, you've left me, really with them a really hard task.
One of us is a fantastic place to live with a rich culture of love and diversity, welcoming to all I am elated to stand before you today as a mayor of Wandsworth, your first Muslim mayor.
I am deeply on it.
and humbled by your support today, as I wholeheartedly embark on the journey as your mayor, together we stand at the threshold of a new era filled with challenges and opportunities alike, but let us not be daunted by the road ahead, instead, let us embrace it with courage and resilience.
Together we will tackle the pressing issues facing our community, which the Council has been doing in a number of ways, a decade of renewal, substantial funding to improve fund, improve our roads and pavements, the best cost of living package in London, opening parks and public leisure spaces where London's leading light in the arts and culture London Borough of culture 2025,
And at the heart of all this, our commitment to ensuring the benefits and opportunities of this wonderful place of one one's wealth are accessible to all.
Charities hold a special place in my heart and are fundamental part of my religion.
Charities also play a vital role in nurturing the ones with communities this year I have chosen three charities, rackets, cubed, tutoring community kitchen and Homestart Wandsworth.
So rackets cubes play a key role in underserved areas, they currently run six after-school programmes in Wandsworth, supporting over 180 children per week, and about 200 households per week Tooting community kitchen run by a great bunch of volunteers who not only provide a food bank but give support to individuals by providing them a safe place taking them out of isolation and vulnerability Homestart Wandsworth,
they work with families to create an environment where young people can thrive, they aim to help children to shine, to give them a chance of a brighter future. I would request that you support me
Supporting these charities, lastly, I extend a heartfelt thank you for my thank you for everyone's kind wishes, praise and support throughout my journey.
My list of names is exhaustive.
But all thanks and praise goes to God.

that that concludes the formal business for this evening, I hope members and guests can join the outgoing Mayor and I, in the adjacent hall, for some refreshments, I hope that it will be possible during the evening for me to meet every one of you, thank you.
